Midnight in NY (& on blogging)

Mijn hoofd is lichtelijk getroebleerd door overpeinzingen, lieve lezer, teweeg gebracht door recente ontwikkelingen in New York. De relatie tussen mode en media faalt er nooit in mij te boeien en deze keer volg ik met ingehouden adem. Suzy Menkes verlaat na 25 jaar het thuisfront voor een nieuwe baan bij Vogue, als soortement van blogger voor zover ik begrepen heb (oh ironie!). Dit is revolutie. Geen onlogische ontwikkeling, echter. Begin februari schreef Suuz nog over bloggers:
My head is fuzzy with contemplation, dear reader, caused by a recent event in New York. The relation between fashion and media never fails to fascinate me, so I was quite pleasantly surprised to hear about the possible revolution Suzy Menkes might have set into motion by leaving The New York Times for a position at Vogue that really does resemble … blogging. (Oh, the irony!) Not the most illogical of developments, however. In February she wrote:    

“Now that women and men [ … ] are used to promote the brands that have been wily enough to align themselves with people power, even those with so-called street style have lost their individuality.” – Suzy Menkes in The Circus of Fashion

Een zin die mij sindsdien niet heeft gelost. Ik zie het gebeuren. Dat kan ook u als lezer niet ontgaan zijn, al spot een buitenstaander vaak niet dat het gaat om een flirten met mogelijkheden die aan de basis staan van de groei en verdere ontwikkeling van voornoemde individuele stijl. Things they are a-changing. Is een Menkes de messias voor blogs? Voer voor menig filosofisch gesprek en discussie. Doch het hoeft geen betoog: een collectieve identiteitscrisis is in volle vaart. Ook naast de blogs. En hoewel ik beleefdheidshalve hoop dat ze aan u voorbijraast, toch alvast een goede raad: hou heldhaftig vast aan wat u lief is en vergeet de takken van de bomen, want vanaf nu is het back to the roots. Basics! Voor mij is dat zwart. Want wat er ook gefluisterd wordt, zwart is het nieuwe zwart. Zwart is voor altijd. Zwart is mijn houvast in tijden van onzekerheid en verandering – mijn comfort zone.
A phrase that hasn’t left my mind for an instant. I see this happening. As a reader, you too must have noticed this. Things they are a-changing. Bloggers aren’t what they used to be back in the days. We grow, but sometimes we get a bit lost, too … Is Menkes a bloggers’ messiah? I’ve spent many an hour discussing this, philosophizing on the subject. However this may work out, it’s apparent that – amongst bloggers – some sort of identity crisis is in full swing. With the new trends being presented, the new it-colors making their appearance on my desk, I crave for the comfort zone that is black nailpolish. Because whatever is whispered to be the new black, true black shall always be my go-to color.  

Maar fuck it, soms wil een meisje gewoon glitters. Al is het om de tintelende adrenaline en sparkly eyes te matchen die de fashion weeks onvoorwaardelijk uitlokken. Met of zonder Suzy crisis. The best of both worlds: Sally Hansen’s Midnight in NY. Terwijl het feest in volle gang is éven op het terras gaan staan en lucht happen, hoog boven de stad met al haar lichtjes. Exact dat gevoel, vertaald naar (identiteits)crisis-proof gitzwarte nagellak met een subtiele multi-colored shimmer. Comfort zone, maar dan in party modus. Bring it!
A comfy black with a glitter that matches the twinkle in my eye and sparks of adrenaline that the fashion weeks seem to cause = sheer perfection. It’s like escaping the party by sneaking out onto the rooftop balcony, looking out over the city and it’s shimmering lights and drawing in fresh air. That exact feeling translated to a(n) (identity)crisis-proof nail varnish. My comfort zone, but in party modus. Bring it!
