Yesterday I had a date with Elke Willemen – M.A.C. Senior Make-up Artist – and Lyne Desnoyers – Director of Make-up Artistry – chez M.A.C. Dansaert, Brussels. It was such a very inspiring afternoon…

Lyne Desnoyers picks up a seemingly random piece of make-up and makes magic happen. She created the perfect rush of blood on a model’s face with two shades of lipstick (including Russian Red, I kid you not) and painted on a perfect coat of mascara with an angled eyeliner brush. Thinking outside the make-up box and making make-up look like modern sorcery: now you’re pretty and now, with the right spell and brush, you’re va-va-voom gorgeous – with just a few products, really. While she was creating a look on the model, Lyne explained what she used and why she used it. Bloggers – including Yours Truly – soaked up the information like a sponge, hoping to take it to our own little make-up dresser at home and play a trick on our daily routine: a favorite lippie becomes a cream blush, concealer goes on with a powder puff and mascara shall be painted on with a brush to look as if you’re not really wearing mascara (“Why yes, I’ve got really long lashes”). Because, like Lyne said: we’re all just girls, we like pretty things and playing with make-up.

Elke Willemen created perfect, dewy skin and ladylike brows plus a glossy, transparent eye combined with an ombre red lip. So beautiful. She explained the beauty of worn-in make-up and the growing trend of grunge and nonchalance: street beauty as a part of street style, off-duty models being photographed with only the few remains of show make-up interpreted as the new look.

Such an inspiring afternoon with these ladies, it’s hard to put it in a blog post and share with you all. You’ll see their tips & tricks implemented in my following looks, no worries (and no doubt about it). A trend report for fall/winter is in the making, but for a quickie tip:

Sommige dingen moeten gewoon gebeuren. Zoals deze Diane von Fürstenberg tas en ik. Ik passeer elke dag voorbij de DvF boetiek in Antwerpen en heb al véél moois gespot aldaar, maar toen ik deze Carolina Lips snake clutch zag … oeh-la, true love.

Ik droeg deze tas naar de Weekend Blog Awards alwaar ik tweede werd in mijn categorie (beauty), waarvoor uitvoerig dank <3 #proudmama. Mijn mani was (uiteraard) geïnspireerd op de tas: Chanel ’Péridot’ als basis met een laagje Mavala ’Graphic’ over scotch tape. Easy peas two-tone nails!

I wore the bag to the Weekend Blog Awards. I ended up winning second place in my category (beauty), so I owe you lots of thankies for the votes! <3 My mani that night matched the clutch: Chanel ’Péridot’ as a base and scotch-taped a layer of Mavala ’Graphic’ over half the nail for an easy peas two-tone manicure.

Meet my morning routine bestie: the Creamy Concealer Kit from Bobbi Brown. Concealer + powder buddy up for a bit of everyday (real-life) photoshop magic.

Concealer, ik heb er een haat-liefde-verhouding mee. Enerzijds wil ik imperfecties verdoezelen, maar het merendeel van concealers ziet er zo onnatuurlijk uit op mijn huid dat ik soms het gevoel heb dat ze de dingen alleen nog maar erger en lelijker maken. En toen ontdekte ik de Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit. Yup, helemaal omgeslagen naar liefde!
Basically doet deze van Bobbi wat een goede concealer moet doen: concealen. Maar dan, dus, met als cherry on top dat de boel eruitziet alsof alles mijn eigen huid is en er helemaal nooit sprake is geweest van wallen of een pukkel. CRUCIAAL! De romige, dikkige formule is besties met mijn drogere huid. Brengt makkelijk aan – ik gebruik daarvoor gewoon mijn vinger, jawel – en voelt fijn & comfy op mijn huid. Wanneer ik de concealer heb aangebracht onder mijn ogen ga ik er over met het poeder et le voilà: perfectie! Blijft vervolgens de hele dag zitten en kruipt niet in fijne lijntjes. Aanrader.

Concealer and me, we’ve never had an easy sort of relationship. Sure, I want to hide imperfections, but a lot of concealers look so very unnatural on my skin that I feel they make matters worse and … uglier. #nolikey Until I met the Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit and I knew: this is true love.
Basically, this Bobbi concealer does a fine job at what it’s supposed to do: conceal. But it does it while looking as if there’s nothing but my own skin – no spots, no under-eye bags, no nothing. The creamy, thick formula is besties with my dry skin. Applies easily (I use my finger for that), blends well, feels all nice & comfy on my skin, … #like! After having applied the concealer under my eyes, I set it with the powder et le voilà: perfection that lasts all day and doesn’t sit in fine lines. Did I mention I’m in love with this concealer? 

Ja, hier heb ik een paar pukkeltjes en rode vlekken…

Ben alweer aan mijn derde pot en in desperate need van een nieuwe… Nog een favoriet in de badkamer is het Environ Hydrating Exfoliant Masque. Perfect voor dagen als vandaag.

Love love love for the REN Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil. After the greatest rose-scented oil bath ever, you don’t really need to moisturize but let’s just pretend it’s crucial, ’cause now that there’s enough time to generously apply your favorite body butter you might as well just go ahead and do it. This is already my third pot of Kiehl’s Crème de Corps soy milk & honey Whipped Body Butter and I’m in desperate need of a new one. LOVE this stuff. Also a #like for the Environ Hydrating Exfoliant Masque, which is perfect for my skin and a treat on days like today. 

Een perfecte zondagnamiddag? Een kleine spa @ home, magazines lezen (Elle, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar), geurkaars branden (Diptyque ‘Coriandre’), macarons knabbelen (Ladurée – vanille, roosjes, oranjebloesem, caramel met fleur de sel en guimauve), wat met mijn nieuwe Lomography La Sardina spelen. Oh, en uiteraard een beetje bloggen …

A perfect sunday afternoon? A little spa @ home, reading magazines (Elle, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar), burning a scented candle (Diptyque ‘Coriandre’), munching macarons (Ladurée – vanilla, rose petals, orange blossom, salted caramel, marshmallow), playing with my new Lomography ‘La Sardina’ camera and … a little bit of blogging, of course.

On popular demand: mijn visie betreffende de zin en onzin van BB creams plus en passant een review van de nieuwe van Kiehl’s. (En waarom hij anders is.)
On popular demand: my opinion on BB creams plus a review of the new one by Kiehl’s. (And on why it’s different.) 

een BB intro a BB intro

Basicly is het hele concept van een BB – ‘blemish balm’ – cream dat het de coverage van een foundation gaat combineren met de voordelen van skin-care. Een Duitse uitvinding voor het betere plamuurwerk bij patiënten met gevoelige, beschadigde huid na chirurgische ingrepen, HUGE in Azië waar BB creams part of the beauty culture zijn en de creams grijzig, dik, dekkend, ‘whitening’ en heavy on the SPF zijn. (Alles voor een poppengezichtje, daarzo.) Bon, de Westerse markt moest ook maar aan de BB cream, doch er werden behoorlijk wat aanpassingen doorgevoerd op het gebied van formulering en marketing. De Europese variant van de BB cream werd gestript van alles wat een BB cream een BB cream maakt. Veel minder dekkend, for some reason vaak te oranje, naast een anti-aging en hydraterende factor (waar ik alsnog een dagcrème onder moet) is de skin care vaak zoek en, laat ons eerlijk zijn, SPF15 vind je ondertussen in élke foundation. Kortom: geeuw! Dan doe ik wel effe verder met mijn beproefde serum + dagcrème (met SPF) + foundation (met SPF) + concealer + poeder (met SPF). Meer werk, meer geld, maar ook bakken meer effect.

So basicly the whole concept of a BB – or ‘blemish balm’ – cream is to combine the coverage of a foundation with the qualities of skin care. The first BB cream was developed in a German clinic to provide plastic surgery patients with a product that would cover up all things unpretty while it helped heal damaged skin. The concept was picked up in Asia, where BB creams are HUGE and a genuine part of the beauty culture by now. Over there, BB creams are thick, grey-ish, have got an amazing coverage, ‘whitening’ properties and sky-high SPF. Brands noticed how youtube & beauty-blog inspired/addicted Western women picked up on BB creams and decided that, sure, the BB thing was something they could sell on the Western market. Yet a ‘few’ adaptations were made, marketing-wise, and the formula’s were tweaked beyond recognition which resulted in the fact that the first Western BB creams were stripped of everything that makes a cream a BB cream. Very little coverage, orange-y pigmentation, little skin caring properties besides basic hydration and the occasional anti-aging (SPF15 is pretty standard, you know). In other words: yawn! I’m not into tinted moisturizers and I opt for a serum + day cream (with SPF) + fondation (with SPF) + concealer + powder (with SPF). So I put in a little more effort & money, but the effect is sooo much better!    

Kiehl’s BB cream

Maar er is hoop. De nieuwste BB creams doen voorzichtige stapjes terug in de richting van de in Azië oh-zo-geliefde formules. Zo ook de Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream van Kiehl’s. Welkom SPF 50! Oh, en hallo pigmentatie-corrigerende werking. De kleur is stabieler dan in de meeste andere Westerse BB creams en heeft niet de neiging te oxideren – niets geen oranje gezicht, hoezee! De dekking kan echter veel beter. Wie niet gezegend is met een nearly flawless skin – ja, ik heb oneffenheden, sproeten en het begin van rosacea onder mijn neus – kan achteraf aan de slag met minstens concealer. Die eerste B (blemish!) in BB blijft een moeilijke om te tackelen, zo blijkt.
Dat gezegd zijnde is deze Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream een fijn product. A little goes a long way: je hebt maar een kleine erwt van de crème nodig voor je hele gezicht en hals. Ik gebruik hem vooral voor zijn skin caring en sun blocking properties. En ik zit dan wel te janken om het gebrek aan dekking, voor wie ermee weg komt is de finish heel mooi en natuurlijk. Ik zag hem voor het eerst in Selfridges, London, waar de Kiehl’s lady hem aanbracht bij Hanne (Snow White Glamour) en jawel: fab! Hij doet het trouwens ook goed als primer. Wel voorzichtig zijn rond de ogen, door de – naar ik vermoed – zware SPF pikt hij behoorlijk wanneer je per ongeluk wat in je kijkers smeert.

Yet there is hope. The newest BB creams take baby steps into the direction of the Asian BB’s. Take the new Kiehl’s Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream for example. Welcome, SPF 50! Oh and hello (pigmentation) correcting properties. The color doesn’t oxidate on your skin – no to orange! Yet the coverage could be (much) better. This BB has got a light to medium coverage which is, I guess, nice and what most Western women want, but it’s not BB! Those who aren’t blessed with nearly perfect skin – I myself have got blemishes, freckles and the beginning of rosacea under my nose – will reach for (at least) a concealer, afterwards. That first B (blemish) in BB seems to be a bitch to tackle…
That being said, the Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream is a nice product. Even though I’m sobbing over the poor coverage (better than most Western BB creams yet nothing in comparison to Asian BB creams), for those who can pull it off: it does have a nice and natural finish. I first met the Kiehl’s BB in Selfridges, London, where it was applied to Hanne (Snow White Glamour). It looked gorgeous. A little goes a long way: you only need a pea-sized dollop of product to cover both your face and your neck. #like I use it mainly for its skin caring and sun blocking properties. It also works well as a primer. Do be careful when you apply this cream around the eye area since it stings in your eyes due to the high SPF.

Al bij al vind ik dit een fijn, waardevol skin care product, maar ik gebruik hem niet als alles-in-één product. Naar mijn gevoel is het nog steeds geen BB cream, maar het is een grote stap voorwaarts. Prima prijs voor een SPF50 met corrigerende werking én tint, trouwens.
All in all  I think this is a valuable skin care product, yet for me it’s no holy grail material. I feel that, still, this isn’t a real proper BB cream, but it’s a big step forward from all the sorry attempts we’ve seen so far. Great price, too.

De Shibuya set komt met drie kleuren (babyroze, seafoam en gebroken wit), een gouden glitternagellak en een dikke zwarte striper om op de nagel te tekenen. Vandaag hield ik het veilig door mijn nagels randomly in de drie snoepjeskleuren te lakken, maar die glitter en liner gaan nog keihard bovengehaald worden de komende dagen …
The Shibuya set comes with three colors (babypink, seafoam, offwhite), a golden glitter and a big-brushed black striper to draw on your nails. I’ve kept it safe & easy for now, randomly painting my nails in the candy colored polishes, but that glitter and the striper will be put to work very soon …
